  castor terminology

With many words in the castor wheels industry, it can be hard to keep up. We hope that this terminology listed below will be a helping hand for you.

Axle

These are a bar which passes via the middle of the wheel which makes it turn.

Bore
Refers to the inner dimension of the blank wheel or bearing.

Plain Bore
A wheel bore that rides directly on axle, no bearing.

Axle Nut
The nut on the side of the leg that holds the thrust washers, spanner bushings, and bolt or lube axles together.

Anti-Static Castors/ Electrically Conductive Wheels
These castors provide electrostatic discharge which is generated by transport equipment or the goods being transported. It’s recommended that electrically conductive wheels are used within environments where sensitive electronics are in operation such as clean rooms, laboratories, hospitals and power stations Here At Ross Handling we offer swivel, fixed and braked anti-static castors.

Low Profile Castors
Low profile castors have a small overall mount height which usually applies to applications that need to move but do not need much floor clearance.

High Temp Castors
These are castors that can withstand high temperatures ranging from -40° to +280. High-temperature castors are most suitable in food processing plants, bakeries, freeze-drying processing, fridges and freezers, kilns and powder coating processes.

Durability
The ability of a castor wheel to withstand demanding applications.

Ergonomic
Features which reduce injury by providing easier manoeuvrability or lower rolling resistance (FYI our Apex range is perfect for this)

Hub Length

Distance from one side of the wheel hub to the other.

Dynamic or Rolling Load
The load capacity of a castor or wheel while in motion.

Swivel Radius
The horizontal distance from the centerline of the castor kingpin to the outer edge of the wheel.

Wheel Diameter
Measurement of a wheel from opposite sides.

Plate Dimension
Plate dimension is the measured distance from one edge of the top plate to the opposite side and the distance from the other edge of the top plate to the opposite side.

That’s the end…We have a huge range of castors available at Ross Castors with many choices to suit you for any and every application. If you have any queries call us now on 0116 276 4987.
