How we're becoming more environmentally friendly

Ross Handling sends out hundreds of parcels per day to all over the United Kingdom and Europe, the nature of our business means that there’s a risk of creating a very large carbon footprint. That’s why we’re taking steps to limit our carbon footprint and do our bit to help.

As well as doing as much as we can in-house, we also are proud to stick with couriers that are taking big steps to reduce their emissions such as DPD.

At the start of 2020, they operated 149 electric vehicles. This number rose to 1700 by November 2021 and a further 1000 electric vans were ordered in May 2022.

This green initiative includes making cities ‘all green’ by solely using electric vehicles in locations including Leicester, where we are located. As you can see from our carbon certificate from DPD, in 2022, we’ve sent out 3,200 parcels this year, using electric vans, saving an incredible 883KG of CO2.

We also installed charging points outside of our trade counter, they are free to use by customers and any staff members who drive vehicles.

As a growing company who are sending out more and more parcels each year, it’s important we are conscious regarding our carbon footprint, so by using couriers who help us reduce our environmental impact, it’s a big step in doing so. We also recycle 100% of our cardboard packaging, the boxes we use are either reused or made from recycled materials, we don’t buy new boxes, which is why our packaging is unbranded. Both of our official couriers use fully recycled packaging from recycled materials.

Another way we are trying to do our part is by switching our in-house web browsing over to Ecosia. Ecosia is a social business that operates a search engine, and uses the advertising revenue from searches to plant trees.

Ecosia is transparent regarding their finances and publishes monthly reports. In July 2022, they were able to plant 4,711,672 trees using the advertising revenue generated by people using their search engine.

Using this search engine is another step we’re taking as a company to be more environmentally friendly and we are now looking to become ISO accredited, a standard for environmental performance.

There’s been a large push in all areas of a business to be more environmentally friendly, from the initiatives mentioned above to little things like ensuring computers and lights are turned off at night, all of it helps reduce the businesses environmental impact.
